The Moruga Scorpion: The World's Hottest Pepper

In 2012, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion was officially crowned the world's hottest pepper by the Guinness World Records, measuring over 2 million Scoville Heat Units. To put that in context, a jalapeño sits at around 5,000 SHU. The Moruga Scorpion is 400 times hotter.

Where Does It Come From?

The Moruga Scorpion originates from the Moruga district in southern Trinidad — a lush, tropical region where the combination of soil, humidity, and climate creates ideal growing conditions for some of the world's most intense chillies.

The pepper gets its name from its distinctive tail, which resembles a scorpion's stinger. Its skin is deeply wrinkled and bumpy, and the colour ranges from bright red to deep burgundy when fully ripe.

The Flavour Behind the Fire

What makes the Moruga Scorpion special isn't just its heat — it's the complex flavour profile that precedes it. Before the burn arrives, you'll notice fruity, almost tropical notes: hints of citrus, a floral sweetness, and a depth that no other pepper quite matches.

This is why we built our Scorpion Blaze sauce around it. The heat is real, but so is the flavour.

How We Source It

We work directly with farmers in Trinidad & Tobago who have been growing Moruga Scorpions for generations. Every batch is harvested by hand, inspected for quality, and processed within 48 hours to preserve maximum flavour and heat.

This direct relationship isn't just about quality — it's about community. Every bottle of Moruga Collective sauce supports the farming families who make it possible.

A Note on Heat

If you're new to the Moruga Scorpion, start with a small amount. The heat builds gradually and can last 20–30 minutes. We recommend pairing with dairy (yoghurt, coconut milk) to temper the burn if needed.

The Moruga Scorpion is the soul of our brand — fierce, complex, and deeply rooted in Caribbean heritage.
